Re: PUR Hiker follow-up: msg#00065culture.backpacking.light
Whoops, forgot what list I was on for a second :-) *New (2002 model) Hiker with prefilter and hoses, but w/o the sack and universal bottle cap: 11.0 oz *Old (t-handle model) Hiker w/ same: 12.0 oz. At least half of the one-ounce difference appears to be moisture in the old filter's cartridge, so they can be considered essentially the same weight. A gravity setup seems to save in the neighborhood of a net three or four ounces over carrying a Hiker, once you include the raw water bag. The Hiker's speed is it's trump card, as it's good for a liter a minute flow rate. For a party of two or three, I can't imagine not taking it (six or four oz/hiker, respectively). Chemical treatment (or drinking untreated water) remains the weight champ. By my scales, a new Aquamira kit is three ounces. Pristine sells a smaller kit that would weigh even less. Iodine is likewise light. I don't know how to calculate the weight/utility of water disinfection through heating. --Rick --- In BackpackingLight-F5Bj5G+ccuY@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "amytys" <amytys@xxxx> wrote: > > Um... you missed the BIG question... how much does the new filter > weigh??? |
