Hi Ed, I think cagoules are great. When mountaineering you can just use them with gaiters and leave the rain pants behind. And you may not always have to close the pit zips to use it as wind protection. I've found that if your cagoule is considerably larger than you need it to be it ventilates better because more vapor is lost out the top by your face. Wearing a pack tends to cinch the cagoule up so it doesn't flap or get in the way, even if it is oversize for you. Personally, I think if you had a flapped Kangaroo pocket in front and made the back of that pocket a mesh material you could improve the ventilation even more by leaving the pocket open when you wanted to, but that's just me.
