Hi Keith,

Quite a few thinking hikers do scoff at aspects of Jardine's "Voodoo
engineering," especially scientists and engineers who also hike.

We got a big charge out of discussing the most outlandish of
Jardine's statements on one hike and coined the phrase JBS, (Jardine
Bull Sh**) to describe the most questionable of these.

Still, even with their flaws his two books have been influential in
encouraging lightweight hiking, which is certainly a good thing.

I suspect that aside from questionable science, he is guilty of
diving overly enthusiastically into brand new offbeat areas while at
the same time publishing enthusiastic endorsements of them. Endorsing
Corn Pasta as the great energy food, then endorsing strictly raw
foods is a telling example of this, I think.

Many of us have experimented only to soon discover that those
experiments didn't work for us, but we haven't published glowing
endorsements suggesting that others follow those experiments while
they were still ongoing experiments, only to follow them with
equally glowing endorsements for something that is completely the
opposite. Best, Don L.
