I was camping with a small group of Scouts in the desert, and drawing water from a seasonal creek which flowed from the foothills above our canyon. 200 yards below our camping area the stream slowed to a trickle, and finally disappeared into the sandy canyon floor. Our group was equipped with several filters, all but one of which quickly gave up the ghost as the kids tried to filter the sandy water. (This was at least a year before I saw a pre-filter, and well, was thinking just a bit slow <g>). I boiled water so that we might have enough if the last filter had crapped out. I didn't time the process, but I recall it was a considerable amount of time that had to pass before the water container could be handled without discomfort. I even tried burying the container in the sand, to take away the sun effect. If and when you try the boiling method, and particularly if you're going to only boil a quart at a time, please post a note detailing the time the water took to cool. I'd really be interested.
