Michael,

I took a quick look at your uploaded review, and the URL for Vasque isn't
clickable. I'll skim the rest of your review this afternoon. Please use
the test folder for playing around.

Thanks!

Please respond to BackpackGearTest

Hey Michael! Thanks for your Zephyr GTX owner review. This was a very
through and informative review. Please find my edits below.

When you are done editing your report you should repost it to the Yahoo
mailing list with the word REPOST in the subject line. When your edited
report is approved you will be given instructions on how and where to
upload for web version.

Thanks so much. Nice job!

+++++++++++++

[EDIT] Please do NOT include your phone number. It is needed on your
paper application, but we don't want everyone on the BGT group seeing it
let alone everyone on the world wide web.

[Comment] I would include your name in the header:
Owner Review
Vasque Zephyr GTX (Goretex) Backpacking Boots
By: Michael Jay Lissner

that made me stick all the way through, and get my Eagle.
[EDIT] I don't believe you need a comma after "through".

converting my ultra-heavy Boy Scout techniques into ones more suited
ultra-light thru-hiking.
[EDIT] add the word "for" "ones more suited [for] ultra-light
thru-hiking."

Product Name: Zephyr GTX
[Comment] For clarity you might add the word "boot" to the end of the
product name.

Suggested Retail Price: $165.00 American Dollars
[Comment] This is fine, except you should drop the zeros. It is also
acceptable to say $165 US.

Manufacturer's URL: www.vasque.com
[Comment] When sending urls to the list via e-mail, you should add the
http:// so that the link is clickable. In the html version you don't need
to do this, as long as the link is clickable.

Size Tested: 13 American (47 European)
Weight of Size 13 Boots: 65 ounces (1.85 kilgrams)
[EDIT] "Weight of Size 13 Boots" should simply be "Actual weight". You
already said they were size 13.
[EDIT] forgot the "o" in Kil-O-grams. (kg is fine too.)
[Comment] I get 1.84 kg.
[Comment] Did you weigh them new, or after you had applied waterproofing
or the boots had taken on moisture? I would make a note to explain this.

Product Description: Medium-weight tall backpacking boots with a Goretex
lining, webbed tongue and Vibram outsoles.

[EDIT] Feel free to use all the info from Vasque (pasted below).
- Color: Brown/Brown-Black
- 2.4mm Waterproof Nubuck Leather
- Nylon Fabric
- DryTech Footbed
- 3-Bar Knit Nylon Lining
- Tri-Density Contoured Phylon Midsole
- Vibram® Trailtech High Carbon Rubber Outsole
- Goretex
- Integration Technology
- Padded Collar

(oh hell, who am I kidding - swamps)
[EDIT] No profanity, please.

At times I probably had upwards of two pounds of mud stuck to the bottom of
each boot.
[EDIT] Add a comma after "At times"
[EDIT] two pounds (.9 kg)

but these were extreme conditions that probably would get even rubber boots
wet inside.
[Comment] Is this saying that the water cam over the edge rather than
through the Gortex? I'm a little confused by this as water will NOT go
through rubber. Please explain.

I feel bound to mention that the rubber rand around the front of the
boot...
[EDIT] Rand?

so something is changing for the better, whether be my foot or the boots, I
care not.
[EDIT] add "it" after "whether". "whether [it] be my foot"

When I was hiking through the shallow snow in Spain, my feet did feet a
little bit cold,
[EDIT] my feet did feet... second "feet" should be "feel"

in one isolated spot a very small area (perhaps an eighth of an inch long)
of the rubber rand has peeled up
[Edit] add two commas. "in one isolated spot, a very small area (perhaps
an eighth of an inch long), of the rubber rand has peeled up...
[Comment] Okay, I guess you did mean "rand". What is a "rand"?

The lace will soon break, I do not believe that the rand will get worse
very quickly, and the Goretex is
something I planned on happening.
[Comment] This is border-line projecting, which is not allowed. My
opinion is that you substantiated these projections with facts and
experiences and that your report is fine. Don't be surprised if some other
moderators chime in to the contrary though. Leave it alone unless you hear
differently.

- Are durable enough to last hundreds of miles, excusing the
vulnerable laces and Goretex.
[EDIT] This is projecting that you need to change. You really don't know
if they'll last "hundreds of miles" or not. Just say the are quite
durable.

Application to test RITR All Weather Writing Journals

Application to test Rite in the Rain All Weather Writing Journals I am applying to test one of the available Rite in the Rain All Weather Writing Journals. I have read the BackpackGearTest survival guide, ver. 1202, and agree to fully comply with the rules outlined within. I have also signed, sealed, and delivered the tester contract, and have received verification that my contract has been received. Personal biographical information: Date of App 07/11/2003 Name Andrew Mytys Age 33 Gender Male Height 6'1" (183 cm) Weight 165 lbs (75 kg) Email amytys (at) highstream (dot) net Location S/E Michigan Product Preference: If selected for this test, my preference of product would be for the journal with the smallest footprint first, and escalating, by size, to my last choice, which would be the largest sized journal available. Note that by size I mean height/width dimension, not the number of pages. Sorry that I'm so sketchy on the details. The product link given in the test call was on a secure site and the version of the web browser I use, MSIE 5, coupled with my security settings does not allow for any graphics on this page to display - without the page graphics, it's difficult to differentiate one product from the next. From what I *can* see (text only), I believe my preferences are as follows: 1) Shirt Pocket Notebook 2) Extreme Journal 3) Adventure Travel Journal Why I would like to participate in this test: With twelve journals available to BGT (read twelve "low end" products available), and a lot of testers already feeling near the limits of commitment, I believe that we're going to have difficulties filling this test. So, I'm stepping up to the plate and getting in my app for this QUICK AND DIRTY test. Thanks to Shane for putting "TEST CALL" in the subject line for this test, and for basically writing an application in the text of the post. Certainly, this test is starting out easy, and I don't see that changing through the course of the reports. We're talking notebooks, right? Field information: My anticipated use for the Rite in the Rain All Weather Writing Journal would be as a field journal used to keep notes on my ongoing BGT tests, trail notes, and contact info for any "Hot Babes" that look like hard-core backpackers :) Test locations include Michigan (both lower and upper peninsulas), Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This summer, I will also be hiking along the John Muir Trail in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, and will be taking some time to do some hiking in the Grand Canyon later this year as well. In particular, the Grand Canyon trip should be a great place for "Hot Babe" notation - the steep grade of the trail keeps those hiker legs in excellent form, the sun supplies a gorgeous tan, and the experienced backpacker is easy to spot by the size of their pack - at the bottom of the canyon, a pack with more than 2,500 cubes (40 l) is a red-flag that shouts out "rookie". Test conditions would range from walks with my dog to jaunts through the local park trails to multi-day hikes ranging from 20-150 miles (32-240 km). Trail conditions would find me using the journal in humid, wet, dusty, and dry circumstances. I'd most likely find myself writing in the dark on some occasions as well. Temperature ranges for the 6-month test period would vary from about 20 to 100 F (-7 to 38 C). Test Plan: In intend to write in my journal with pencil, pen, and various common types of markers. The markers I will use will vary in terms of tip thickness and ink formula. My intention will be to see how the paper holds what is written on it, and in what situations, if any, "bleeding" occurs. I will test for bleeding primarily in wet conditions, looking to see how old notes hold up when wet and how well one can actively write in the journals while it is raining. I'm also curious to see what happens to a wet journal when it is subject to multiple freeze/thaw testing. Winter conditions will satisfy my curiosity. A Note on Deliverables: I'd like to clarify that, while page images will be available in reports, all "Hot Babe" contact information will be withheld. Additional Background/Backpacking style: I live in Michigan and have been hiking seriously for 15 years, although I've camped since I was 6 years old. I consider myself a lightweight hiker, meaning that I carry the lightest gear I can find that meets two simple deliverables - providing a comfortable wilderness experience and adequately supporting the goals of my trip. Unless my goals are time/distance oriented, my pace is always slow. I rarely exceed 1.5 miles/hour. I rest frequently, hike long days, and enjoy whatever nature throws my way. The amount of gear that I carry varies extremely, depending on who I'm with (solo, wife, kids, dog) what the nature of the trip is (day- hike, fast-packing, expedition), and the hobbies that I will be exercising during the trip (photography, fishing). My base packweight, therefore, can weigh anywhere from 12 lbs (5.5 kg), which is my current level of ultralight comfort, to an excess of 35 lbs (15.8 kg) - again, this is base weight... no food or water. REPOST Owner Review - Mountain Hardwear Sleeping Bag (1995 Nickel Cigar, Long)

Mountain Hardwear Sleeping Bag (1995 Nickel Cigar, Long) Owner Review Biographical Information: Name: Chuck Carnes Age: 33 Gender: Male Height: 6?0? (1.83 m) Weight: 175 lbs. (79 kg) Email address: ctcarnes1-/E1597aS9LQAvxtiuMwx3w@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx City, State, Country: Taylors, S.C. United States Date: July 10, 2003 Backpacking Background: I have been influenced to go camping and backpacking all my life. Every summer for the first 5 years of my life, my parents took me camping. I was in the Boy Scouts at the age of 12 and have been backpacking, on and off, ever since. Needless to say, I love the outdoors. I enjoy taking a lot of STUFF in my pack and can?t seem to get my total pack weight down, I wonder why. I usually hike around Pisgah National Forest and The Great Smoky Mountains. I go at anytime of the year and try to hit the trails when there is no rain, if it does it?s O.K. Trail terrain, such as rocky trails or muddy trails, is not that big of an issue with me. I just like getting out and enjoying nature. Product Information: Manufacturer: Mountain Hardwear Year of Manufacture: 1995 URL: http://www.mountainhardwear.com/ Listed Weight: 4 lbs. 9 oz. (2.07 kg.) Weight as Delivered: Same as Listed Size: Long MSRP: $145 Product Description: The Mountain Hardwear Nickel Cigar is a 5° F (-14.9 C) Polarguard HV, mummy style sleeping bag (hence the name Nickel). The inside length is 84" (2.13 m), it has a 66" 1.68 m) inside shoulder girth, 59" (1.5 m) inside hip girth, 52" (1.32 m) inside knee girth and 43" (1.09 m) inside foot girth, all packed under a 6" (.15 m) loft. This bag has a separate hood cord and draft collar cord. Zipper runs down ¾ the length of the bag. Field Information: Location: All over Pisgah National Forest and Smoky Mountains Elevation: Varied from 3000 ft (914 m) to 6,000 ft (1829 m) Weather: Exposed mostly to winter weather: snow, cold rain, high winds ? some at the same time. Shelter: Tent ever since 1995 except for once, and that was in a shelter on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains Description of Trip: Most, if not all, of the trips I took this bag on was in cold weather ranging from 18° to about 40°. I have to say that this bag has met just about every form of liquid that has been thrown at it (rain, snow, condensation, sweat). I have always stayed warm in this bag and have never experienced any cold nights that an extra cinching on the hood cord couldn?t handle. I never had to put on extra cloths or put a heated water bottle inside. On the nights that it got damp or wet, it never seeped through the nylon shell and I always stayed dry. ===== Chuck Carnes __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo!
