Yes - Ben has
heard all the songs he posts before. We have a huge tub overflowing with
about 250 vhs tapes; drawers filled with a variety of CD & tape music -
about 75 CDs; then about 30-40 DVDs of various films, oddities; Plus the
radio and massive volumes of magazines, books, newspaper clips that he
saves. He frequently picks them out when we're in the stores.
His favorite spot is the "magical" $1 bin. All videos, CDs, and DVDs
$1. Yes, he has access and control of every tape, CD, DVD, etc. that he
uses. He can change the CDs & DVDs, freeze frame, ff, play, rewind
with the buttons all on his own. He is now mastering the VHS remote
control and knows it better than I do. There are days when he is tired or
less focused that he will hand me the CD to insert into the music player.
Those days are becoming infrequent. And you know - I approach all of
this the same as we do with more "typical" FC. Hand over hand
assistance first, and he has gradually been able to go independent with
much.
The only 2
things he needs help with is putting a VHS tape into the slot or putting a
regular tape into the tape player. The motor difficulties are most obvious
with that type of motion. He can grasp the tape - but the motion to
insert and push as one unified action needs assistance. It's very
paradoxical in some ways.
He knows
exactly where on each film, DVD, CD the dialogue, song, or point outs are.
He finds the spot and takes my hand and points to what he wants to "say" or send
as message. We usually read posts together. Then he will
either answer directly or spend some time in "thought." Many of his
music CDs are "greatest hits" or compilations of songs such as "Greatest Hits of
the 60s" etc. He's kind of astonishing with the
television. I rarely watch T.V. Extremely rare. However,
sometimes he'll go right to the TV, turn it on, click click to a specific
channel and point out a phrase or show, or have me listen to a bit of
dialogue. I don't know *how* he knows what is on and when it's
on. But, he does. ;o) YOu should see his room at the end
of a busy dialogue day. I need the Cat In The Hat's clean up
machine.

I
got a kick out of Ben's pick "As Good as I Was". That hit home.
Now
that my "loose ends" are tied up, maybe it's time to adjust and
retire
those boxing gloves. I was thinking yesterday, after running
into a
group autistics with their staff, that it might be time to focus
more
on autism. It's a more peaceful venture befitting my advanced
age.
I'm curiious as to how Ben picks out the tunes. Has he heard
them
before? Does he pick them out to buy? I assume he has easy
access to
them and takes them out himself.
