Interested? ~Sheree Actually, VERY interested.  I don't think I've mentioned here yet that I've recently begun working with a 5yo who has CP.  He's communicative but unable to speak, so he's got a little sign and a lot of yelling.  The suggestion that is going to be implemented this year is getting him set up with a communication device - can you see where I'm going with this?  He's totally a great candidate for FC (but will probably become independent almost immediately, he's that "into" communicating). I'll probably check out the list sometime this week.  :) -Janna -- Early Birds Program Assistant (special needs 1:1 preschool) Autism Support Worker (independent contractor) ABA/IBI Therapist (independent contractor) Calgary, AB, Canada BMus, BAPsych **************************************************************************** "Home is not a place. Other support workers, who have worked with the people for 10-20 years. The requests are being made by either taking the worker by the hand and lead him to the kitchen, or banging softly on the kitchen door (which is locked, due to their behaviour problems). If the person is being told to stop! he throws himself on the floor and start screaming and throwing things. 'Older' workers believe that giving in to the demands, the person will be drinking 150 cups of tea a day. > > Yes, I realize these are adults and not children, but there should still > be goals - just as children don't stop learning at 6, nobody stops > learning when they reach adulthood. FC - short excerpt

At the beginning of this school year, the first thing our Research Methods professor showed us was a 20 minute video on FC, and different case studies and reports of parents who's children it had helped. I was uneasy, guessing what was to come next. After she'd fascinated everyone in the lecture hall with the wonderful things FC could do to help autistic people communicate, she showed us the results of a study that was done which "proved" that FC actually didn't do anything at all. She showed this study in about 1 minute, and then dismissed the class. I decided I didn't like her. She didn't seem to know what FC and autism were all about... and that's fine, because it wasn't her area of study... but what she did was misleading! Because, there ~are~ studies out there which show the validity of FC. But anyway. I decided that for the end of term paper, where we had to find an original psychology study and report on it, I would do it on FC - you know, to educate her a bit. :D I did it on the study by Sheehan and Matuozzi - I don't know if anyone's ever read it, but I liked the study, it considered both sides of the question and looked at FC from all angles. They weren't obsessed with trying to either prove or disprove FC - they were just interested in gathering information, to further pursue at a later time. I just wanted to share a bit of my report. ~~~ One other issue that might be further explored is the topic of sensory issues in people with autism and how that might affect their communication. Just as we would allow a near-sighted person glasses, or a deaf person someone to translate in sign language, autistic children have many sensory needs that can severely affect communication and were not taken into account in this study. A further study might be repeated, but with allowances for special lighting in the room, keyboards with raised keys, breaks every few minutes to let out pent up energy so the participants will not feel the need to perserverate on certain phrases (a problem in this study), as well as taking into account their difficulties with processing different types of information ? pictures, spoken words, written word, etc. If a participant is seeing two pictures as disjointed bits of colours and shapes with no meaning attached, and is asked to point to which one is the "tree", it is understandable that they will point to a random one or not point at all. Autism is a complex disorder that severely distorts the processing of information. Any study conducted without taking a specific person's difficulties into account is the same as giving a blind person a regular book to read without allowing them a Braille version, and then concluding from the study that that person is unable to read. ~~~ Soooo... anyone know how I can skip the rest of my undergrad, and just do my PhD already? :D ~Ana
