I would say if their proofer is a "dot" proofer such as a Kodak  
Approval or Fuji FinalProof, that would be a reasonable strategy.  
However, if their proofer is an inkjet printer and that would be what  
you're profiling, I think that strategy would be dangerous. Profiling  
an already profiled/color-managed printer like that, especially if  
it's not very well-behaved, can lead to, how shall I say?...non- 
linearities in the resulting profile. I would be concerned about  
smoothness and such in the resulting separations after having gone  
through this conversion.

On the other hand, it sounds like this is about your're only option.  
Personally, I would still try to dig a bit deeper and see if you can  
discover what source profile they might be using. I can't imagine  
they're proofing these jobs to an un-color managed inkjet device.
