I had read the paper written on the subject previously: http://www.ece.rochester.edu/~gsharma/ciede2000/ciede2000noteCRNA.pdf The math scares the hell out of me, but I noted that within the implications of discontinuities on page 22 it is stated that significant discontinuity only "manifests itself for samples that are 180 degrees apart in hue".
