Subject: Sakai 2.1.1 Grouping External Students

Hi,

We met a problem with creating groups in Sakai 2.1.1. We had a site with
external student roster and tried to set up a group by the Manage Group
function in our adapted Worksite Setup tool. While the group could be
created, we found that no external student could be persisted in the group.
My colleague traced the source and seemed to find that these external
students actually did get saved in the sakai_realm_rl_gr table with the
field "provided" set to 1 and their group saved in sakai_realm with blank
"provider_id", but were immediately deleted when the system refreshed the
Sakai database with our external student database (we do not store any
grouping information in this external student database).

Is that supposed to be so? Or we perhaps did something wrong?

One theoretic solution is a bit brutal - overriding the field "provided" to
zero instead of one (make them internal students) when saving the students
to sakai_realm_rl_gr table to avoid being deleted during the subsequent
refresh. But we are afraid that this might adversely affect some other parts
of Sakai. Any comment or advice?

Thanks a lot.
