Ultimately, when maven is ready to fire up the compiler, it doesn't care what's in your console's JAVA_HOME variable or where the sym links in /usr/bin/java and /usr/bin/javac are pointing. To summarize: there is a symbolic link /System/Library/Frameworks/ JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK that points to the directory of the version of the JDK for OS X to use. When I change this from 1.5.0 to 1.4.2, my problems are gone. I apologize for this decidedly system-specific tangent. thanks everyone, Zach A.
