I went ahead and ran the OS X update to get Java 5 as the default. I was worried that it would cause problems (our production servers still run JVM 1.4.2) and it has.
Zach, what OS do your production servers use?

RedHat Enterprise 4. Switching platforms may be part of the underlying cause, because if I run it on my mac, I don't see any problems.
It shouldn't be that, right?
48 is the version number for java 1.4, 49 for 1.5.
I know you are sure that everything on your OS X box is wired to point to the 1.4.2 deployment.
Howabout a quick sanity check - modify your scripts (assuming you have some) to just do a java --version where the maven command is?
I have lost my sanity many times while dorking around in buildmaster land...
