Re: Poor Translators: msg#00043

Subject: Re: Poor Translators
Howdy folks,

This relates to PSL more than Back-End.

I'm getting some Back-End code translated into Russian by a sf
volunteer. However the guy translating it asked me about the
translation for:
"Something broke, I'm not sure what though??"

Which is from class/locale/en.php (a psl file)

:-)

I just had two points about this.

1) I don't think the phrase is being used any more as it only seems to
occur in the locale directory (I updated my CVS version & grepped but
didn't find it anywhere else). This line should be nixed!

Getting rid of these phrases does improve things... we should do just that and use a more generic term (as you suggested).

2) It never really occurred to me before (as a unilingual English
speaking North American), but using slang or casual language like the
phrase above must be a pain for folks to translate into German, Spanish,
Dutch, Norwegian, etc... As Open Source code matures it is important to
use language like "Unknown Error" which although it is much more boring
is way easier to translate and understand.

As the Spanish translator, I can add that it's always better to use strings like: "This whatever %s, something else". So that we can use the %s to better translate those strings -- as they do in other projects...
