No. And AFAIK its optional, this works for me: xmlrpc_call http://localhost/RPC2 defaults.arrayForKey Languages I've tried stringForKey, objectForKey, dictionaryForKey, and dataForKey The objectForKey action is the master method and will return any type. All the other variants check the type of the default, eg arrayForKey will only return the result if its actually an array.
