I don't know anything about log4j,  but there is a JOGI client
application which is probably a good example of such things, called
JogiClient - I assume the source of which is included in the tar ball.

If you come up with any notes or snippets of example code you should
really (PLEASE!) sign up for an account on the docs plone and post them
there.   OGo is in serious need of some basic examples to get people off
the starting block.
