Another possibility is that the client library treats all strings as ASCII. The XML-RPC specification has some issues on that topic. (hm, www.xml-rpc.org is gone?) I think its common practice that XML-RPC is implemented as in OGo/SOPE, that is, only use valid XML (eg no binary data in strings), use the XML charset markers and allow any Unicode value as a string value.
