Hm. I guess they don't ;-) On the other side, if those other servers 
may have a full HTTP/1.1 implementation and work just fine with the 
100-continue issue.

No. Preauthenticate means that the credentials are embedded in the very 
first request (so that the 401 is unnecessary in case the credentials 
are OK). This way you can save one HTTP cycle.

I think the 100-continue issue is even recorded in Bugzilla.
