You are correct, The workspace also a type of  folder but a super folder.  What 
seperates Workspace from a standard content object is the fact that the 
Workspace also carries personalization informations and can be created from a 
template.

So basically, the Workspace provides API for the following operations:
• Administering and modifying
• Making it a template workspace
• Administrating membership managementts personalization

Folders are one of the (core) Document Types that are associated to 
workspace(s). and lifecycles can be associated to it.

This above  is based on my understanding about nuxeo for the past few weeks.
