workflows and lifwcycles

Hi,
our requirement is like this.
The 3 states in lifecycle are underwriter1, underwriter2 and approver. The same 3 users are also there in my workflow. If amount (one of the attributes)is more than 10000,document will be forwarded to underwriter2 and from there it will be forwarded to approver. Else, document will be forwarded to approver directly. I could do this in workflow template. But since I'm attaching custom-lifecycle also to my document, I want to have the same criteria in lifecycle also. How can I achieve this in lifecycle..? (I want to have transition like this

underwriter1 -> approver (amount <10000)
underwriter1 -> underwriter2 -> approver (amount>10000)

Can somebody tell me how to achieve this?
