Federation - Pros & Cons

Hello,

We are considering splitting our corporate docbase and storing a
particular set of documents in a separate docbase and then federating
the docbases. The documents we want to separate are a unique object type
that also have a third-party application running in the docbase that
deals with just these documents. But of course since the application is
installed in the docbase, it also affects users who don't deal with
these special documents.

Can anyone offer anyone insights they might have on working with
federated docbases, pros and cons, watchouts, things to consider? Any
thought are appreciated.
