Default values for fields

Hi

I'd like some of my fields to have a default value, but can't see how
to do it.  I've looked at the customization guide, and looked through
the source a fair bit.  I guess I can do it manually, but I wondered
if there was something already there, either at the db or templating
level.

Otherwise, any suggestions for a 'clever' (i.e. simple) way of doing
this would be welcome.  My only idea at the moment is: 
- for every field, if it's a new issue render with value
"request/fieldname | default", otherwise with "request/fieldname |
context/fieldname"
