boot-loaders.grub.bugs

Subject: RE: GRUB 0.97 is released

Okujisan,

just a very tiny and almost irrelevant feedback:

The stage2 of the binary distribution fetched from
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/grub/grub-0.97-i386-pc.tar.gz
identifies itself as "GNU GRUB version 0.96" and
not 0.97 :-(

Similarily all older versions identified themself with
one step lower than they were labeled in the tar.

I patched offset 0x215 of the stage2 from 6 -> 7

Some older binary versions had a similar quirk
(0.95 identified itself as 0.94).

=======================================================
Some success info from tests I did:

These tests were done with a HP Vectra, which required
(as far as I remember) the "d" parameter for the install
command. "setup (hd0)" now sets up a correct MBR.

* OK: Chainload El Torito
-------------------------
I tested the trick to chainload an ISO (El Torito)
CD image (after having already booted GRUB from floppy
or hard disk) via memdisk and smart-boot manager, it
works (see: http://www.lrz.de/~bernhard/grub-chain-cd.html ).
It worked also in 0.96 :-)

* OK: Savedefault / default saved
---------------------------------
appears to work correctly (both, when Grub saves the default
and when I modify the file "default" by hand).

regards & thanks
