I've certainly had a lot of difficulty with it.

The best solution I've found is to rebuild your kernel without PCMICA and
include the latest version as modules instead.

Here's a link I found very useful reading:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=pan.2003
.09.10.14.14.06.632148%40127.0.0.1&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26i
e%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3Dpcmcia%2Bredhat%2B9%2Bkernel%2Bthinkpad%26btnG%
3DGoogle%2BSearch

Starting the 'official' PCMCIA (not RedHat's) uses different scripts..
/etc/rc.d/rc.kernel once you're sure all is well you could add the script to
your sysv style start up.

One important tip though... and it cost me some time, when you're rebuilding
your kernel and run 'make xconfig', go to the bluetooth section and set
RFCOMM to 'y' to include it in the kernel.... otherwise RFCOMM won't work,
but everything else will.

PS. The above URL/link is a long one and may get truncated by text email.
Make sure you paste the whole thing into the browser URL

sounds like a bug in your PCMCIA init scripts. What distribution do you
use? May you have to change some things in the PCMCIA config files. For
Debian this is /etc/default/pcmcia.
