P800 connectivity probs with 2.5 kernel: msg#00217

Subject: P800 connectivity probs with 2.5 kernel
i've recently bought a Sony-Ericsson P800, and am trying to connect to
it using a D-Link DBT-120 USB dongle. so far, it's not working, and i
wonder if anyone has suggestions?

running
    Debian/unstable
    Linus' kernel 2.5.72
    AMD-760 MP motherboard
    AMD-768 OHCI usb 1.1 controller
    D-Link DBT-120 B2 USB bluethooth adaptor

dmesg includes

    Jun 27 23:49:54 d kernel: drivers/usb/core/usb.c: usb_hotplug
    Jun 27 23:49:54 d kernel: hci_usb 1-2.4:2: usb_device_probe
    Jun 27 23:49:54 d kernel: hci_usb 1-2.4:2: usb_device_probe - got id
    Jun 27 23:49:54 d hcid[6280]: HCI dev 0 up
    Jun 27 23:49:54 d hcid[6280]: Starting security manager 0

(plus various USB stuff prior to that registering interfaces, etc).

running

    bash-2.05b$ hcitool scan
    Scanning ...
            00:0A:D9:17:08:B9 David's P800
    bash-2.05b$

seems to produce sane output: my phone is set to that name, at least.
similarly, on the phone, if i scan looking for devices, it find the
desktop machine.

however, l2ping fails:

    bash-2.05b$ sudo l2ping 00:0A:D9:17:08:B9
    Ping: 00:0A:D9:17:08:B9 from 00:80:C8:26:F5:09 (data size 20) ...
no response from 00:0A:D9:17:08:B9: id 200
no response from 00:0A:D9:17:08:B9: id 201
Recv failed: Connection reset by peer
    bash-2.05b$

as does sdptool:

    bash-2.05b$ sdptool browse
    Inquiring ...
Failed to connect to SDP server on 00:0A:D9:17:08:B9: Connection reset by
peer
    bash-2.05b$

any help in debugging would be much appreciated ...
