Archer Daniels Midland: msg#00145

Subject: Archer Daniels Midland
Call me paranoid. I was sitting here this morning, in a more rural part of
rural Vermont, watching Meet the Press, when a commercial from ADM came on that
made me sit up and steady my helmet.

It was an odd commercial, filled with smiling people and a manifesto about the
work of a benevolent multi-national conglomerate to make sure food is grown as
cheaply as possible, and 'grown where it grows best.'

So, in anticipation of a world built on ADM's vision, I visited their website:

http://www.admworld.com

(IMO Cargill is worse-behaved corporation, but ADM is still scary.)

excerpt from Corporate Profile brochure:

'As the world?s largest processor of food
and animal feed, ADM processes enough
food to feed more than 300 million people.

Our commitment to improving the quality
of life doesn?t end with feeding the hungry.
Through ADM?s processes and plants,
we transform nature?s bounty into end
products that also provide the malnourished
with vitally important nutrients
which may be missing from their existing
diets. Closer to home, we provide food
manufacturers with the ingredients
they need to manufacture better packaged
foods?products that meet the complex
and wholesome nutritional profile
demanded by today?s consumer.'

..

'There is probably not one meal consumed
in America that does not contain at least
one ADM food ingredient. In fact, it?s more
likely that a meal would contain several
ADM products.'

..
'As one of the most vertically integrated
agricultural processors on the globe, ADM
is capable of transporting crops from the
farmer?s field, processing them into a
variety of value-added products,
and delivering them to our
customers worldwide.

ADM and its subsidiaries own and operate
approximately 2,000 barges, over 2,000
tractor-trailers, 19,500 railcars and 85 tow
boats. In addition to this company-owned
fleet, ADM shipments also occupy a total
of five million trucks, 500,000 railcars and
12,000 barges a year.'

Front page Manifesto:

At Archer Daniels Midland Company, we?ve made it our mission to unlock the
potential of nature. That refers to the tremendous variety of agriculture-based
products we make?food, animal nutrition, fuels & industrials, and nutritional
ingredients. But it also speaks to the ingenuity with which we make them.

? Because ADM recognizes that high yields at low
cost are the only way to feed a hungry world, we
seek to lead the way in market share and lowest
production cost in all the categories and markets
we serve.

? In an increasingly unified world marketplace,
every crop must grow where it grows best and go
where it?s needed most. In response, ADM is expanding to become even more
seamlessly integrated as a single, global franchise.

? If life on our small planet is to remain sustainable, it?s clear that more
of the things we all use must be renewable. With naturally based solutions from
ethanol and biodiesel fuels to paints and packaging, ADM?s growing portfolio of
value-added products is meeting the need.

As we strive to harvest nature?s bounty for the benefit of all, we?re gratified
that others are recognizing the quality of our efforts. This year, ADM was
chosen by our customers as the leading supplier of commodities and the best
company in the development of nutritional ingredients. We also were rated for
our excellence in corporate governance, ranking in the top 5 percent of the
Standard and Poor?s 500 companies and in the top 1 percent of our peer group in
the food industry.

By following our principles rigorously, we are growing−not just for the
sake of
growth, but with a focus on turning the farmer?s crops into an ever greater
asset for our customers and Shareholders alike. As we achieve this objective,
we also progress toward our ultimate goal: improving the quality of life for
all.

If it's gotta be good, it's gotta be ADM.
