On a related problem, I'm getting 
"Premature EOF on input .wav file" 
I saw some posts claiming that simply doing 'sox in.wav out.wav' would repair the headers, but when I try this, it only seems to duplicate the file.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

You can run mpg321 to dump the files to wav, like this:

mpg321 -w somefile.wav somefile.mp3

It isn't included with Fedora Core 4 (for stupid patent reasons) -- but you can get it in yum by adding the livna repository (google it).
