Subject: MPC/musepack to go opensource - Maintainer/Developer of MPC XMMS plugin wanted - msg#00003
List: audio.mpc.general
Hi,
i am Christian and one of the project admins of the audio compression
format MPC ( musepack / MPEG+ ) and also of the matroska container
format. I am not a developer and mainly into organisation/PR. This is my
first email to the XMMS developer ML and i am turning to you people to
ask for support.
Please allow me to use this email to announce that MPC is now turning
into an opensource audio compression format. While the decoder always
was open, the encoder was not in the past. Development on MPC was slow
recently, but there is hope it will put up speed again. MPC is also
known as 'musepack' and also as 'MPEG+'. It is based on the MP2 audio
compression standard and also using subband coding. However, due to its
highly developed psy model it is currently perceived as the best
mid/high bitrate ( 128 - 256 kbps ) lossy audio compression format by
many audio experts, especially by those centered around the
Hydrogenaudio.org community.
MPC will be hosted on http://corecodec.org , an opensource community
like sourceforge, but concentrating on multimedia projects. The project
page is on http://corecodec.org/projects/mpc and most of the available
sourcecode was uploaded to CVS now already. The license form will be L-GPL.
Reason i am turning to this list is that we are asking the developers
reading here if anybody might be interested to join the MPC development
team, mainly to maintain and develop the existing XMMS plugin for MPC,
but maybe also to care about MPC implementation into other important
Linux media applications like FFMPEG, mplayer, Gstreamer, Xine, etc. (
optional ) . The developer looking into this should have indeep
knowledge about Linux itself, as well as a basic idea about the most
important players and encoders for it, and also basics about audio
compression.
MPC is currently moving from the well accepted SV7 bitstream format to
the long awaited SV8 version, with the following new goals
- allow using of MPC in video containers, such as matroska
- support more than 2 channels, to allow surround encodings
- further enhancement of encoder performance, especially in the low/mid
bitrates
- introduce a new encoder structure based on interacting modules, to
allow improvement of it by different developers, as well as reusing any
of those modules in other opensource encoder projects
- adding a DRC ( dynamic range compression ) element to the blocks
It is well possible that MPC will leave the basic principle of subband
coding in future, and introduce a form of transform encoding similar to
other audio compression formats, but likely not for SV8.
I hope i could wake your interest in participating in MPC development
and am looking forward to receive emails from you if you want to know
more about it.
Best regards
Christian
MPC and matroska project admin

CVS on corecodec.org/projects/mpc is now active
Hi,
due to recent events ( short life signs from Frank, which shouldnt make
us euphoristic yet ) i decided to invest some time to upload all source
code i have access to to the CVS on http://corecodec.org/projects/mpc .
For some strange reasons it seems anonymous access is broken right now,
but i hope the Corecodec tea, can fix it soon.
The CVS knows two modules now, one is called 'encoder' and the other is
'decoder' . After talking to the other developers i will probably add
another module, 'XMMS' for the XMMS plugin, and maybe its a good idea to
upload the foobar200 plugin sources also ( i have to talk to DEATH about
this before ).
BTW, Dibrom offered to maintain the MacOSX compilable sources and he
just registered his developer account on corecodec.org, but even the
member authentification seems to be broken ;) ..... some work to do for
the Corecodec team it seems.
Anyhow, its time we get this project standing on solid ground, and using
CVS like many other projects do could be a good start IMO.
Regards
Christian

XMMS plugin maintainer - no response
Hi folks,
its time we start using this mailing list more often, as using webboards
to discuss things like this can be cumbersome IMO.
Frank is currently looking at MPC again, and he was requesting help from
us on a couple of issues :
*1. XMMS Plugin*
As long as foobar2000 has not been ported to Linux, its still his
preferred choice for audio playback on Linux, and he is obviously
planning to do development and audio testing with it. Therefore its
necessary that someone who is versed enough with MPC, XMMS and Linux
cares about the plugin. If Frank has to do it himself, his precious time
will be spent on maintaining the plugin, instead of improving the codec.
This cant be in our interest, so i am herewith trying to encourage you
to talk to any developer you know, who fits in the above mentioned
skills range.
*2. Samples Page*
Frank had the idea that a samples download page has to be created, so
that people are all using the same audio samples when conducting
listening tests. A great idea IMO, and i am checking with one of our
team members who has a nice server with 15 GB reserved for us, connected
with a T3 and max . 80 GB/month. I hope he will agree to use his server
for this purpose, although i dont expect him to allow that the link gets
spread publically. Its maybe a good idea to only have torrents seeded
publically ( i can do this if you want, Azureus can easily handle 100
seeds at the same time and we also have a tracker we can use for that )
and to reserve the download page to trusted members only, from who we
know they actively participate in listening tests.
*3. SV8 alpha encoder listening test*
Frank stated more than once that he was disappointed that nobody took
the time to actively test his sample SV8 encoder that time when he
published it. I will ask Frank to make a new release of it soon, and we
should ask Case to make a fb2k encoder plugin from it so we can start
testing.
You all did a great contribution to MPC with the donation for Frank's
new PC, now lets start to become *active MPC team members* instead of
just lemmings waiting for the next rain. CiTay should be an example for
all of you, he did an incredible job with the organisation of the
donation process, and can be called 'saviour of MPC' now because of this
;) .....
Christian
P.S. It would actually be nice if anybody actually replied to this
email, and to the mailing list ...... :sigh: ....
