Ohmygawd ... I forgot that certain things like Software Update would
not work without a password to get past the firewall on our network.
And the only avenue that gives a password prompt seems to be a web
browser, so as soon as I opened a browser and typed a password, "fink
selfupdate-cvs" worked.
I keep forgetting because things like email and ftp don't need a
password to get on the net.
