Torsten, aren't you using the AbstractViewController? http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/shale/framework/trunk/shale-view/src/main/java/org/apache/shale/view/AbstractViewController.java?view=markup I suggest to extend your viewControllers/backingbeans from "AbstractFacesBean", since it has nice helper methods.
