just as a note, there are many operations in derby which require rollback to operate correctly, some your application may be using without even knowing about it: o successful restart of a database (does your application never require to reconnect to the database after a unexpected shutdown?) o error recovery after a constraint violation o errors in triggers o lock timeout/lock deadlock o a number of other sql statement errors which do some work on the ddl, and require log to backout that work.
