BUT -- this is from a working system. I booted demudi to get the data to
answer your question, and the snd-hdsp module loaded, jack worked,
rezound came up and started bouncing its meters, and the hdsp mixer and
config programs came up. Nothing from the speakers yet, but I didn't
expect there to be yet (I don't even know if they're plugged in -- signs
of life from the RME card has been the problem).

Maybe I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but now I'm more
confused than ever. I swear I didn't do anything to it (that I know of).
I looked through the output of dmesg, but didn't see anything of
interest in there. There was some interesting looking messages on the
console during boot -- do you know where they were logged?

If you have any explanations or conjectures about this, I'd sure like to
hear them.
