Sadly some of these monitors are so old that they don't have any info on the
web. The one in question was an Essex Monitor Comany NF-series (sorry, don't
remember details) - a defunct company that probably rebadged it anyway.

dpkg-reconfigure may not update the XF86Config-4 file
Hmm, I can never quite tell what it's doing. I think it does update this file
as it should.
so you may need to
edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file by hand as a final resort. Check :
Option "XkbModel" "pc101" (possibly, if you are using old keyboards)
I must, at some point, get my head round the different keyboard options. I
usually use "pc105", that works for the keyboard I have at home, but the one
at 'work' ended up Americanised (or is that MACified?), with the pound signs
swapped etc. [# where the £cash should be ;-]. I dare say a quick google will
sort me out on this one. Maybe I should just count the actual keys? perhaps
this is more to do with "XkbLayout" [ "gb" in my case] than "XkbModel"? I'm
familiar with using xmodmap and xev to change the keyboard map, I use the
'Windows' keys for custom keybindings.

Of course you may know all this so please ignore my ramblings:)
TBH I go a bit blonde when it comes to hardware issues and previously I've
stuck to known compatible hardware, which does make life easier. Fortunately
I've had enough hardware donated that I should be able to sift through and
dump all the non-compatible hardware. Your suggestions are well appreciated.
The HorizSync and VertRefresh are for a 14" monitor I have that work
