Changing to Polar Projection

Google Maps seems to use a simple rectangular projection that doesn't
suit the polar regions. I think there may be a way to add a projection
transformation into Google Maps so you could use a polar projection
but I'm not sure how that would work

Does anyone happen to know if there is there a way to do this?
