A few things that can be done.
1. You need to give the emulator some time for it to come up. It
isn't exactly instantaneous :)
yes it usually take a minute to completely load. another thing is do not close the emulator after you test it keep it there and you'll save lot of time

2.  Use the "adb logcat" command from the SDK or DDMS in Eclipse to
check if any exception is being thrown.
