[android-beginners] Hello World app - the emulator is different

When I follow the "Hello World" example in the documentation, running
the application using "Run > Run" the emulator pops up but it looks
different to the screenshot in the documentation, ie it is an image of
a mobile phone with the word "ANDROID" on the screen rather than just
a black window with "Hello World" at the top.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or how I get to see the
"Hello World" window,
