From Analog to VoIP: Asterisk Brings Telephony Together Under One Open-Source Platform: Tech Posted by: comforteagle
By Howard Wen | Diggable
Six years ago, Mark Spencer started his own Linux technical support business. Unlike other tech startups at the time, he spent his money frugally. Spencer had to; he didn't even have enough to pay for an office PBX system, which can cost up to several thousands of dollars.
"I had about $4,000 to start it out with, and I wasn't about to buy a phone system, so I figured I'd just make one," Spencer says.

My Favorite Projects 3/5 - Jono Bacon: Putty: Fav. Projects Posted by: comforteagle
Putty - not the most exciting program in the world, but truly essential. Putty is a little tool to connect to a remote shell. When I need to use Windows, Putty is essential in being able to talk o a remote Linux or Mac machine. The makers of Putty also provide pscp; a Windows version of scp. I have used to this literally hundreds of times when out with clients and I need to grab a much needed file.

A GIMP In Photoshop's Clothing: Open Source Posted by: comforteagle
By Howard Wen
There is a love-hate relationship for The GIMP. Whether it's deserved or not, the biggest criticism that this open-source, freeware image editor has gotten is over its user interface. The comparisons often lead to Adobe's Photoshop. Perhaps this is unfair -- after all, why should The GIMP developers feel obliged to make a Photoshop clone?

OSDir.com Project of the Week: Endian Firewall: Linux Posted by: comforteagle
Endian Firewall is a commercially supported security Linux distribution for turning any box into a full scale security appliance. It features application-level security, a stateful packet inspection firewall, virus, spam, and web traffic filtering as well as a VPN.
How'd this get started?:
Raphael Vallazza: Basically we wanted to provide a security tool that was simple and flexible. We started spending about two months of development to add some features and a more pleasant and intuitive interface to IPCop. Nevertheless we faced various obstacles mainly due to some IPCop architectural drawbacks, like the lack of a package management system and the fact that, being based on Linux from scratch, we had to re-compile the whole distribution for each change we would make. So we decided to start developing EFW, adding the RPM support and yum for updates, creating a build system that could be more complete and efficient. This choice allowed us to step away from IPCop and to proceed in a direction that we believe is more suitable for a professional product that has also an option for valuable commercial support.

OSDir.com Project of the Week: SugarCRM: Open Source Posted by: comforteagle
SugarCRM is a full featured CRM (Customer Relationship Management) application for small business to the enterprise. Comprised from PHP and MySQL it is designed for maximum ease of deployment for the management of sales leads, business contacts, and more.
OSDir.com: Why and how did you get started?
John Roberts: We started SugarCRM in April of 2004 after resigning from our jobs in product management and engineering at E.piphany Inc. All three of us decided that if SugarCRM was to be a successful project we would need to work on it full-time, and fund development out of our own pockets initially.
