For reasons too obvious to go into here, Bill Gates himself is permanently exempted for our monthly competition for evilness in the open source world. But, like Satan or the other voices in your head, we should expect him to chip in from time to time, if only to tempt and confound our vulnerable minds.

December is always a tough month for us collectors of evil. Something else is out there, something bigger than us all. In the cold snow and the dark, it is stronger, swifter to find out who is naughty and who is ... not so naughty. They fear it, the humans. They work hard to hide their corruption from Father Christmas's all-seeing-eyes.

How do you work out who the movers and shakers are in the free software hacking world? For most of them, there's no income to be appraised, there's no stock market valuation to watch. What value can you give to these contributors, who work without care of reward, except maybe all those groupies hanging out at the stage door of the Sourceforge ftp servers?
