Azureus

[ | Report broken link ]

Programming Language: Java

Description:
Azureus is an advanced multiplatform BitTorrent client written in Java that includes a tracker and a torrent maker, thus providing all the components needed to run a BitTorrent solution. BitTorrent is a file distribution protocol that reduces the load on central servers by using peer-to-peer technology. Instead of downloading from a single overburdened server, a client can download from hundreds (or thousands) of other peer clients simultaneously, allowing for efficient and high-speed content delivery. Azureus differs from other BitTorrent clients in its new-from-the-ground-up protocol implementation, its easy to use multi-download graphical interface, and its extensive plug-in support.

How'd this get started?: Olivier Chalouhi, Azureus Project Manager: "I started Azureus because I wanted to experiment with SWT and I wanted a more user-friendly BT client. Alon and Paul joined quite early in the project, and since then the goals are to make it the best BT client available. I was "introduced" to BT by a friend and found the technology very promising and simple enough to do something with it on my own.

What makes Azureus unique among BitTorrent clients? Azureus implements its own BT core, so in-depth, it's completely different from other clients. Very few cores are available today, and only 3 are really used : the main line core (coded in Python), the BitComet core (c/c++ windows only) and Azureus core (java). We believe we have one of the best core, in regards to protocol implementation, network optimization, distribution model. We also believe we're the most used client today, and probably the most used core. Our application is really stable and reliable. Now on the functional side, our plugin interface allows unlimited features to be added, and a lot of very useful (and used) plugins are available :
- RSS scanner to start torrents automatically from RSS Feeds
- SafePeer Plugin to block a range of IP addresses
- UPnP support, to configure your network devices
- AutoSpeed plugin, so that users don't need to configure their upload speed (very important with BitTorrent)

Plus, Azureus has an auto-update feature, for both the program and its plugins, which allows us to keep our users up to date very easily with the latest improvements, bug fixes. Thus our user database is quite homogeneous, with about 95% of our users using the latest version with 48 hours of its release."
