From the Recipes dept.:
With Oracle set to acquire Sun and gain stewardship over Java, there are many in the tech world with an opinion on how the database giant should handle its new relationship with the programming language.
One of those opinions is being voiced by Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, who is calling on Oracle to keep Java open. During a conference call yesterday to discuss Red Hat's first-quarter fiscal 2010 results, Whitehurst also took aim at Oracle's operating system business.

...any reason to believe they wouldn't? I can't be certain, but I believe they would probably just follow a "support" model to try and make some income from it.

IMO, whether Java remains open or becomes closed isn't really important.
A bigger issue is Standard Java's increasing complexity. The last upgrades from Java 1.4 to Java 1.5 saw many new features added. The jump from Java 1.5 to Java 1.6 not only had new features, there were some new concepts added. Given that Java's main attraction is because it is relatively easy for new programmers to learn, this new direction towards complexity means higher costs towards enterprise customers.
Java seems to have a bumpy road ahead, especially when you add in other problems, like:
- Competition from Microsoft (with its better GUI development tools)
- Competition from PHP - simpler to learn, and cheaper to run (esp. for small companies)
- C/C++/Visual C++ (much better performance)
- Slow java performance on the desktop (Java 1.6 is still slow, although it is faster than Java 1.4)
- Not truly portable (especially for enterprise scale applications)

Well, if they do close it they will loose heaps of developers to other languages that are open, Ruby for one... if they do close it they are insane imo.
